Running Buddy Policy
Girls on the Run International mandates that in any public race (not a part of the official Girls on the Run Race Series) all program participants must be accompanied by a Running Buddy over the age of 18. If the Running Buddy is paired with the girl by any representative of Girls on the Run (Council Director, Staff, Coach) a background check must be conducted on the Running Buddy. Running Buddies must also comply with all other volunteer requirements set forth by the council.
If the program participants are running in a race within the official Girls on the Run Race Series, it is recommended that each girl be accompanied by a running buddy over the age of 18. If the Running Buddy is paired with the girl by any representative of Girls on the Run (Council Director, Staff, Coach) a background check must be run on the Running Buddy. Running Buddies must also comply with all other volunteer requirements set forth by the council.

I would suggest that we do away with this first paragraph. I think we did discuss this in a meeting. I don't think we want to get involved in dictating what happens with the GOTR participants when they are running in races not sanctioned by GOTR.
ReplyDeleteI would suggest that we begin the second Paragraph (which would now be the first paragraph) with "When" instead of "If".
What has been done in the past with running buddies that are family members? Do they get a background check as well? And if not then how removed does a family member have to be before we require a background check?
So we would need to reword this paragraph to reflect who gets a background check and who doesn't.
Ok, on second thought, maybe we should require all running buddies to get the checks because we don't know what family member might be a registered sex offender and we do need to think of the safety of the other runners as well. If we allow a family member to particpate and then later find out they were, for instance, a sex offender we have placed all of our runners in a vulnerable position.
I agree with Chris. Cheryl
ReplyDeleteWhat is considered an official Girls on the Run Race? Is that determined by International or us? If it's us, then I agree with Chris.
